For a long time, I have looked at vulnerability as a sign of weakness. You may see it as that as well. I hope this blog may change your mind.
In my head, I felt the need to always be super strong and confident, especially as a Phoenix, AZ upper cervical chiropractor, and that no matter what life threw my way I would just shrug off the bad and keep on going. For a long time, I was able to keep my guard up, act like I was just fine, etc. What I didn’t realize is that this was creating walls and unknown barriers between me and those I loved most. By convincing myself of the need to not be vulnerable I had unknowingly created a gap in my life that soon took way more energy to keep open than it would to just break down by being completely transparent.
Brene Brown, a leading expert on vulnerability said “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
When we decide to be vulnerable we grow. We grow closer to understanding who we are. We grow closer to those we love because we rely on them for support and inspiration. And we begin to truly heal. Why do I care about this so much? Because there are thousands and likely millions of people out there who are suffering in pain – physical AND emotional pain. Perhaps they are afraid to tell someone or to tell themselves, that they need help. They may feel alone. They may feel lost. And they may have no hope.
But that is not the case.
We are here to help. And we are here to give hope. You may feel like you have tried everything or you may be afraid to try anything. Be vulnerable and begin your journey to true healing.
As Brene Brown says, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change….[but] never weakness.”
Yours in health.
