Can you believe we are halfway through 2019 already? I can’t! I sincerely hope this year has been off to a great start for you. I’ve had quite the roller coaster this year but looking back I am so glad for the things I’ve experienced. And I am looking forward to what the next half of the year has in store. A friend recently reminded me of something and I wanted to share it with you.
In the United States, we celebrate our independence from Great Britain on July 4th each year. It is a huge celebration with fireworks, barbecues, family, and friends in which we celebrate our independence from England back in 1776. I find it interesting that the 4th of July just so happens to be almost exactly halfway through the year. What a perfect day to reflect on your life, your year, and to create your own Declaration of Independence. Even if the first part of the year hasn’t been very good, you can declare independence from that and start fresh TODAY.
There come’s a point in our life, when we get fed up with our circumstances, our past choices, our health or lack thereof, certain relationships, perhaps our circle of friends, not living our dreams, not going after our goals, or anything else we need to change. Sometimes our past can even feel insurmountable. Odds are that we have been creating it for so long that sometimes change seems impossible.
America’s story of Independence was no different. I LOVE history so let me try to refresh your memory. For many years colonists had been in a pretty rocky relationship with Britain. Britain heavily taxed and mistreated those who journeyed to the Americas. They were like a bully that felt they could do anything. Britain began to place acts on America that were simply ridiculous – feel free to look up the currency act, the stamp act, the townshend act, and the tea act just to name a few.
Eventually, the Colonies became frustrated and decided enough was enough. It was time to fight for what was theirs and to declare their independence from their motherland. I tend to think that many who first talked about taking on Britain probably used phrases similar to impossible, treason and certain death. But those little colonists knew that they had to do something, to step up and fight.
Even though those tiny colonies felt it was nearly impossible and had little to no chance, they began doing all the tiny things that were possible – resistance, standing firm for what they believe in, and going after their something they hoped for, longed for, and believed in. They did everything that they could do. Over time the result was victory, independence, and freedom.
The American colonies had turned the impossible into the possible.
Alright class, why is this history review important and what can we learn from this? Think about it. What is that you are needing or wanting to declare independence from? What is the change that you are needing to make? I bet you already know exactly what it is. All you have to do is take the tiny steps to begin the journey. Make today the day to declare your independence. Today is the day to start cutting yourself free from the chains that have held you back and begin to take the tiny steps to turn the impossible to the possible!
