Before this month ends I wanted to talk about something many of us might think a lot about during the month of February: sex. There. I said it. For some, this might be awkward to talk about but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a very important part of life.
Many men and women find their sex life might be suffering because of chronic back pain, neck pain, erectile dysfunction, low libido, etc. Chiropractic care has been shown to help individuals feel back on top in the bedroom. And here’s why:
One of the goals of chiropractic care is to help fix subluxations, or misalignments in the spine that lead to interference in the nervous system. Our central nervous system controls every cell, tissue, and organ in the body, including our sex organs, and is responsible for coordinating blood supply to those organs.
If there is a misalignment in the upper cervical spine it increases pressure on the nerves which can directly affect sexual health leading to problems such as erectile dysfunction, impotence, premature ejaculation in men, and painful menstrual cycles and fertility problems in women.
All function in the body is under the control of the nervous system. When a bone misaligns it can create nerve system obstruction or nerve interference which blocks transmission signals between the brain and the body. This may cause some chaos in certain body systems leading to dysfunction. A chiropractic adjustment helps remove nerve interference by correcting a misalignment and taking pressure off those nerves to improve nervous system function.
As brain to body communication is restored so is the rest of the body. Function improves across the board, especially in our reproductive system. Blood flow to sexual organs is improved leading to enhanced sexual function in men and women who’s sex lives have been held back by pain. And who doesn’t want that?!
In addition to better sexual function, chiropractic adjustments can increase the production of oxytocin, sometimes called the pleasure hormone. Oxytocin levels play a vital role in sexual arousal, stimulation, and climax. By removing interference in the nervous system an individual may notice an increased sex drive and more enjoyment from sexual experiences with their partner.
For some, sexual intercourse is a painful experience because misalignments of the spine can make certain sexual positions uncomfortable. When this occurs it makes it difficult for partners to try out new and creative ways to better connect with sexual intimacy. Again, this is another reason why chiropractic care can have such a positive effect on sexual health.
So there you have it. Sex and chiropractic are pretty handy together.
